A lie is when you say something which didn't happen. Instead of saying the only 1 thing which happened at a particular time and place, a person said something out of infinite number of things which didn't happen at that particular time and place. A white lie on the other hand is not a lie at all. It is where you tell the truth but you do not tell all of the truth (you save the details).
For example:
I've hang out at a friend's house, Farah but when my mom asked where have I been, I said I've been out.
